THE ZINE SCENE

Crossing Arts Alliance Gallery, Brainerd, MN

IMPORTANT DATES
Exhibition Dates: May 8 – May 26, 2018
Deadline for Online Registration: April 30
Delivery: All zines must be received at the gallery by May 5
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
ZINES! The interesting and wonderful world of DIY culture. What is a Zine you may ask? A Zine is a handmade and self-published magazine that can be reproduced in a cost-effective manner and distributed to the public or traded with other zine creators and collectors. They can include many forms of printed matter, from limited-run artist books to cut-and-paste photocopy fanzines, and everything in between. ‘The Zine Scene’ exhibition explores the origins of zines from the original punk fanzines of the 1970’s, to the indie alternative zines of the 1990’s, and the evolution of what artists create today with a mix of various themes and ideas. Zines can be about anything, simple or complex, featuring culturally-loaded objects or themes, and even completely random things. Zines date back to the early 1930’s, but to this day continue to be vital in providing individuals with a means to share and express their ideas and opinions. This unique exhibition will highlight those viewpoints and promote the importance of self-publishing for all. We invite you to express your self and submit your best work to be featured within ‘The Zine Scene’ exhibition.
SUBMISSION RULES
This exhibition is open to all artists living in the US. Zines must not have been previously exhibited with TCAA. All zines must be ready for display. No zines shall violate any copyright. Zines should be appropriate for all audiences. If your zine includes mature content, please let us know so it can be screened for our viewers. If you wish to donate your zines to our zine/artist book library at the end of the show, we welcome any submissions, please let us know. Theme and Selection

“The Emotion & Energy of Color 2018” – The Curators for this most recent exciting competition are looking for artwork that represents an artist’s unique interpretation and treatment of a subject as it is communicated through the applications of colors.  The dynamic of color, as it provides an abstract language expressing emotion and energy, is a visual statement–perhaps a sharp wit–as an interpretation and reflection of the artist’s environmental perceptions and unique voice.

Colors, as they relate to each other within a piece, may bring forth a flow of myriad spontaneous cerebral reactions as well as visceral sensations that take the viewer deep into the artist’s intentions. These applications of color and the resulting dimensions should inspire the viewer to grasp and absorb stimulating ranges of sensibilities.

We welcome and encourage all entries, which can be created in artistic genres from representational to abstract.  Submissions for consideration can be expressed in any of the following aspects: representational, expressionism, surrealism, or abstraction.

  • Submission Deadline: March 26, 2018 (12:00AM EST)

Even standing there, in the space, I was still trying to absorb the fact that my artwork was being exhibited in a New York gallery. Then I felt honored, humbled, and delighted, all at the same time. I was very impressed with the thoughtfulness in which the work was displayed. The whole show looked great!.”
