Details:
We bathe in the beauty of color and spin thousands of words describing the experience that the cone cells transmit to our brain.  In reality, they are not nearly as numerous as our rods, the cells that register light and dark, the black and white of our experience.  Our rods are less articulated in language; fewer words are generated to describe that experience.  Black & white is primal, the underneath, the foundation, of the opulence of color; black & white is where we register motion and, when the cones do not have sufficient light, our rods optimize our survival in the night woods.  Black & White intends to explore this underground of survival and few words.  Our unique, enormous space affords us the opportunity to exhibit really huge work, and we welcome it.

Alison Hokanson is an Assistant Curator for Nineteenth-Century European Painting at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Theme: “Flowers, Plants & Gardens” – Flowers and plants have inspired visual artists and photographers throughout history to create some of their most beautiful, emotional, and memorable works of art.  Regardless of art form, when an artist becomes “blocked,” nature frequently offers him or her a new spiritual foundation and inspiration as they pursue their creative journey. Flowers, plants, and gardens symbolize continual rebirth, fresh beginnings, fragile persistence, and alluring symmetry. Whether it is a single flower, a garden in full aromatic bloom or a “shy” plant on a window sill, there is no mistaking the awesome complexity of the planet’s precious myriad types of vegetation.  This abundance of flowers and greenery inspires and challenges the creative mind to redefine and/or simply glorify their splendor.

Deadline: March 31, 2017 – Society of Arts + Crafts Artist Awards

Free to apply: Apply Now!

The Society of Arts and Crafts welcomes applications for the 2017 Artist Awards.

Every other year, the Society awards $3,000 each to three craft artists living in New England. As a mission-driven non-profit, the Society continues to support craft artists through opportunities such as this and we are honored to continue to award artists. This is a merit based award, yet we do take your cover letter into consideration as this, like all juried awards, are subjective. To be eligible, you must be living in New England.

This year, Ellen Wieske, 2010 Artist Award Winner and Jeweler, and Marilyn Zapf, Assistant Director at the Center for Craft, Creativity and Design, will join Luiza deCamargo, Associate Curator at the Society of Arts and Crafts, to jury the applications.

The Society believes that craftspeople have a knowledge of materials and an expertise of technique. Traditionally, craft has been defined by material — wood, ceramics, glass, textiles, and metal — and the techniques used to transform raw material into objects. We acknowledge that contemporary craft often challenges our notions of technique and material, and we honor these new expressions. If you believe your work does not meet this definition yet still falls under the purview of craft, please explain in your cover letter. No paintings, photographs, drawings, or traditional sculpture will be reviewed. Previous winners are ineligible to apply.

Deadline: March 5, 2017 – WIDE OPEN 8 – Call for Entries

Open Call for Submissions from artists all over the USA for a juried exhibit, Wide Open 8, to be exhibited in the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (BWAC) gallery  – an 8,000 square-foot Civil War-era warehouse on the Red Hook waterfront.  The enormous space of the gallery affords us the opportunity to exhibit really huge work, and we welcome it.  We are privileged to have another of NY’s art elite as our juror, the Museum of Modern Art’s Cara Manes, Curatorial Assistant in the Department of Painting and Sculpture.  With her guidance and selections, we look forward to another spectacular show.

The broad theme of “Wide Open 8” encompasses all the possibilities of knowledge and freedom and love – wide open spaces…arms wide open…eyes wide open – but as with all things, there is the inevitable opposite – wide open to attack…corruption…failure.
