Illumination and The New Flux – NYC

This fall Agora Gallery presents two complementary group exhibitions which together re-frame the thematic and stylistic tension between painting and photography. Illumination: An Exhibition of Fine Art Photography showcases 6 photographers whose work allows viewers to a glimpse into worlds both imagined and hyper-real. With a meticulous eye for detail, the works of these photographers highlight the fundamental reality of dreams and desires. The New Flux: Naturalizing the Art of Painting continues this exploration into medium specificity. Featuring 11 artists, the exhibition showcases the full range of techniques and perspectives available in painting today. Commenting on how nature influences the architectural and social development of urban spaces, the artists featured in The New Flux mingle pictorial realism with an almost filmic sense of narrative and tone.

Both exhibitions open October 20 and run through November 9, 2017, with a joint opening reception on Thursday October 26, 2017 6-8 PM. Entrance is free.

Pathways: Blurring the Lines – NYC

Agora Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of Pathways, an exhibition featuring the works of Enrico Ambrosio, Westby and Mercier, Lorena Becerra, Anita Birkenfeld, Hanneke Kempers, Nancy McLean, Iva Milanova, Frédérique Négrié, Alaleh Ostad, Elke Riedel, Rody, Svetlana Sintseva, and Bekir Smolski.

Through a survey of the diverse oeuvres of the aforementioned thirteen artists, Pathways examines how art can blur the lines between fantasy and reality. For example, Enrico Ambrosio’s digital explosions of color and light are contrasted with Nancy Mclean’s dynamically textured, whimsical adaptations of everyday scenes and objects. Meanwhile, Alaleh Ostad reinterprets traditional landscape scenes by transforming them into dynamic, abstract compositions through energetic swirls of oil paint on canvas. The exhibition considers these motifs through a myriad of media, including paintings, sculpture, digital compositions, photography, and multimedia collages. The innovative use of various materials and media by each of the artists in Pathways presents the viewer with the opportunity to overstep the boundary of the real into the ethereal.

Pathways will open on September 26th, with an opening reception on September 28th from 6-8pm, and will remain open until October 17th, 2017.

Breaking with Realism: Meditations on Emotion – NYC

Agora Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of Breaking with Realism, featuring the works of Marco Mendoza, Noelle Kristine, Maciej Marecki, Nancy Landauer, Rina Lazar, Alex Osborne, Sydnei SmithJordan, Joan Criscione, Iftah Geva, Nobuko Saji, Claudia Mayer-Mallenau, Vandana Nittoor, Philippe Thélin, Georges de Groot, Heesu Choi, Patricia Brintle, Marc Tremblay and Herluck Antoine Blémur.

The eighteen artists in this exhibition are each recognized for their own respective practices that offer a refreshing meditation on how variations in color, composition, and texture reflect the complexities of emotion. The exhibition pushes the boundaries of traditional realist painting, sculpture, and photography by juxtaposing imaginative, contemporary portraiture with dynamic, abstract works that recall themes of spirituality, humanity, and the natural world in piercing detail. Furthermore, each artist presents a variety of mediums, including but not limited to oil and acrylic on canvas, pastel, and collage that invite the viewer to contemplate the collective language of the human experience.

Breaking with Realism will open on September 2nd with an opening reception on September 7th from 6-8pm, and will remain open until September 22, 2017.

Chelsea International Fine Art Competition Exhibition: The Best of 2017 – NYC

Agora Gallery is pleased to present the 2017 selected artists of the Chelsea International Fine Art Competition. Now in its 32nd year, the competition has a rich history of recognizing exciting new talent from all over the world. This year’s participants display a growing social awareness, an eager curiosity of spatial and tonal questions, and outstanding technical skill.

Included are several incisive photographers who document contemporary urban, exurban, and completely wild places with compassion and respect. One selected sculptor gives life to outsized and fantastic shapes. There is a wide range of painting on display, including pieces whose abstraction is so subtle that it verges on something more like stylization. There is also a palpable return to hyperrealism, with several impeccably realized still lifes and portraits that dare the viewer to do a double-take. Among the displayed works is a feeling of rediscovery of the hand-wrought craft of art in an increasingly digital world.

The exhibition opens August 19, 2017 and runs through August 30, 2017 with an opening reception on Saturday, August 19 from 6-8 pm. Entrance is free.

Enigmatic Visions: Beauty in the Details

Agora Gallery presents Enigmatic Visions, a new collective exhibition that is singular in its attention to the subtlety that can be found in contemporary art. While many equate progress with simply making the next piece bigger and louder, that is not the beginning and end of the state of today’s art landscape. Though the eleven artists on display in Enigmatic Visions come from all corners of the globe, each brings out the magic in more modest concerns.

This shared interest in the small scale can manifest in many different ways. It can be a study of physically empty places: flat, rocky plains or the lonely, mysterious seas. It can be zooming in on a single object for an updated take on the still life. This is a recurring motif in the exhibition, from a series of austere black-and-white photos of flower blossoms to intensely focused images of the body in motion. It can even be a small psychological space, such as the depiction of a single figure or an isolated group of people.

Enigmatic Visions opens July 28 and runs through August 17, 2017 with an opening reception Thursday, August 3 from 6 – 8 pm. Entrance is free.

Sensorial Realities: Voyages Onward – NYC

In Sensorial Realities, Agora Gallery’s new group exhibition, every canvas on the wall is a portal to a different world. The nine artists featured here offer some of the most seductive alternative universes a viewer can hope for, whether it’s a reinterpretation of Gilded Age portraiture or a compression of twenty-first century concerns into a surreal landscape. They create spaces out of oil, acrylic, stone, ceramic, and mixed media which break down barriers and open up new ideas.

Some pieces on display are outright landscapes. There are stripped-down paintings of endless plains, which are made inviting by simplifying the brushstrokes yet unknowable by taking away the horizon line. There are scenes of single people amongst their own place in the land – at once less intimidating but more psychologically fraught. There are classic views of merry seas and beautiful gardens that are made contemporary with their exaggerated colors and forceful compositions. Then there are the “worlds” of another kind: probing portraits, abstracted color fields, and symbol-laden tableaux.

Sensorial Realities opens July 5 and runs through July 25, 2017 with an opening reception Thursday, July 6 from 6 – 8 pm. Entrance is free.

Unbound Perspectives and The Elixir of Color: Contemporary Conversations – NYC

This June Agora Gallery presents a pair of exhibitions that generate a unique and essential dialogue between them. Unbound Perspectives, a group exhibit featuring thirteen artists from all over the world, presents a holistic look at the current state of contemporary art. From ink to photography to wood inlay, Unbound Perspectives examines the way image making has changed just in the last few years – perhaps even in the last few minutes. It is an exhibition on the cutting edge.

The Elixir of Color is a solo showcase for the remarkable body of work of painter Sherry Rinderer. Though Rinderer’s pieces tend to share some characteristics, including a degree of abstraction and an outsized scale, her approach varies as widely as the thirteen styles on display in Unbound Perspectives. She is interested in the interplay of textures with one painting, and in the directionality of line in another. In one she layers colors with the softness of an Impressionist; in another she color-blocks her canvas as jarringly as any De Stijl painter. Rinderer is both a chameleon and an auteur.

Both exhibitions open June 10 and run through June 30, 2017 with a joint opening reception on Thursday, June 15 from 6-8 pm. Entrance is free.

Portal to Dreams, Elemental Realms, and Illumination: An Exhibition of Fine Art Photography – NYC

Wojciech Tut Chechliński,Wisdom,Oil on Canvas,46''x32''

Agora Gallery ventures deep into the imagination this May with three group exhibitions of extraordinary range. Portal to Dreams collects six daring artists, several of whom are painters playing with the limits of colors and shape in abstraction. There is also a digital artist who creates uniquely slow-paced animations and another who riddles traditional narrative scenes with intriguing gaps. Elemental Realms brings together a select group of artists with the objective of interrogating texture, both within and on top of the painted surface. A few different participants put the medium of paint through its paces: dabbing it, tossing it, cracking it, and layering it. One artist combines acrylic with gold leaf to create a new kind of physical texture that enters the viewer’s space in a subtle way. In both of these shows, traditions are overturned and expectations are defied.

Illumination: An Exhibition of Fine Art Photography is an examination of the storytelling qualities of photography. Whether they’re using surreal compositions, extreme close-up, unnaturally saturated colors, or pointed symbolism, these artists take digital photography to new heights.

All three exhibitions open May 19, 2017 and run through June 8, 2017 with a joint opening reception on May 25 from 6-8 pm. Entrance is free.

Expanding Expectations: Portal to Enigma, Persistence of Form, and The Fire Within – NYC

This spring Agora Gallery presents a trio of exhibitions that elevate tradition. The group exhibition Portal to Enigma takes on abstraction, with participating artists depicting people, nature, and everyday life through various aesthetic lenses. Some play with color, some play with pattern, some even attempt to turn the invisible visible and play with time. There are also pieces that are purely non-representational studies in repetition, brushstroke, and tone contrasts. A smaller collective exhibition, Persistence of Form, seeks to tease more out of the realist style. The featured work runs the gamut from hyperrealistic to dreamily idealized. The exhibition evokes an incredible variety of emotions using forms and symbols that are easily recognizable.

The gallery’s solo exhibition, The Fire Within: A Solo Exhibition of Ceramics by Susan Kadish, is a celebration of sculptor Susan Kadish’s deep knowledge of ceramic techniques and cultural curiosity. Kadish’s body of work includes firing applications from all over the world, and representative figures as well as vessels. Her imagination is as impressive as her technical range.

All three exhibitions open on April 25, 2017 and run through May 16, 2017, with an opening reception on April 27 from 6-8 pm. Entrance is free.

Spatial Fluidity and Contemporary Perspectives – NYC

This April Agora Gallery embraces the unexpected with a trio of forward-thinking exhibitions. Spatial Fluidity features nine artists who blur the line between two-dimensional and three-dimensional art, be it through introducing new media or using traditional materials in unique ways. There are pieces that experiment with mixed textures, some that use distinctive and asymmetric surfaces, and some that even incorporate light. Contemporary Perspectives is a group exhibition that marries classic subject matter with new styles, such as romantic botanicals portrayed in energized, saturated colors or traditional portraiture that sheds light on historically overlooked people. This exhibition looks at modernity from all sides in drawing, painting, and mixed media.

Both of these exhibitions open April 1, 2017 and run through April 21, 2017 with a joint opening reception on Thursday, April 6 from 6-8 pm. Entrance is free.

The Saturated Palette and Portals of Perception – NYC

This March two group exhibitions of outstanding range come to Agora Gallery. Portals of Perception features a small, select group of painters who create works of fascinating detail. There are cityscapes made of buildings with real personalities, abstract texture-based pieces that turn acrylic paint into physical patterns, beautiful watercolor visions of the seaside, snapshots of modern urban spaces, and portraits of women who refuse to fit into any mold. All are rooted in a particular reality almost clear enough to reach out and touch. The Saturated Palette, by contrast, includes ten artists and offers a far-seeing look at the way color can be used in fine art. Color is used as an accent, as a suggestion, as a main subject, and thrillingly as an exclamation point. It is bold here and subtle there, straightforward in some works and revealed only in contrast in others. For these imaginative artists working in paint, pastel, and encaustic, the possibilities are endless.

Both exhibitions run March 10, 2017 through March 30, 2017 with an opening reception on the night of Thursday, March 16 from 6-8 pm. Entrance is free.

Mélange of Milieu: Defying Category – NYC

This February Agora Gallery presents Mélange of Milieu, a group exhibition highlighting the newest ways to bend genre practiced by artists working today. The eight featured artists hail from the Ukraine, Switzerland, Austria, Japan, and the United States – among others – yet have much to say to each other. The hazy, Impressionistic landscape paintings on one wall seem to both inform and take cues from the brash figural paintings on the next. Mélange of Milieu is unique in the current crop of gallery shows for featuring sculpture as prominently as painting, or indeed any works on paper. The exhibition makes a conscious effort to include a range of three-dimensional works, the result being an unusually revealing look at the field. There are highly realistic bronze figurines of invented animals, sleek and gestural depictions of the moving body in stone, and assemblages of brightly colored wooden blocks that have been both painted and embroidered, in a way, to evoke the patterns of the cosmos.

February 2017 Exhibitions: Plurality of Expression and Emerging Visions – NYC

Agora Gallery presents Plurality of Expression and Emerging Visions, two collective exhibitions that celebrate the different ways today’s artists approach aesthetic. Plurality of Expression includes abstraction, surrealism, still life, and portraiture, each with a twist that pushes them beyond the usual boundaries of genre. A photographer creates “portraits” of women covered or wrapped in various tactile substances in a meditation on womanhood, and on the next wall over a painter superimposes stark, one-dimensional earthly beings onto rainbow-colored paintings of the heavens. Emerging Visions also features a vast range of artists, with an emphasis on technical exploration. One artist creates his paintings by cutting up and repurposing panels painted by other people, while another creates landscapes by painting layers of dynamic, forceful strips of color.

The magic of both exhibitions is dependent on the diversity of the work on display. Only when placed side by side do the images fully reveal how many little decisions and gestures go into their creation. With Plurality of Expression and Emerging Visions, Agora Gallery presents a deep study on both the mind and hand of the artist.

Both exhibitions begin January 21, 2017 and runs through February 10, 2017 with an opening reception on January 26 from 6-8 pm. Entrance is free.

January 2017 exhibitions: Enigmatic Realms and Kaleidoscope of the Mind – NYC

Agora Gallery welcomes the new year with two exhibitions that dive into the most inventive corners of contemporary art. Enigmatic Realms is a collective featuring eight artists who together truly touch every part of modern society. There are inquiries into technology alongside placid images from the seashore. There are highly allegorical narratives, and there are jolting images of objects in motion. What ties each artist together is the unifying determination to see everyday people, places, and things in a new way. Similarly, Kaleidoscope of the Mind is a collective exhibition in which everything ordinary becomes new again. These artists push the technical boundaries as well as the visual ones; there is slashed canvas, painted writing, and thrown paint. These works do not shy away from images and juxtapositions that are confusing and enticing for their unfamiliarity. Between the two exhibits, Agora Gallery is ushering the new year with both techniques and aesthetics that have never been seen before.

Both exhibitions begin December 29, 2016 and run through January 18, 2017 with a joint opening reception on December 29 from 6-8 pm. Entrance is free.

December 2016 exhibitions: Sensorial Perspectives and Landscapes of the Mind

This December Agora Gallery presents two exhibitions that aim to plunge the viewer into new environments. Sensorial Perspectives is a collective exhibition that spans painting, photography, and mixed-media, all in the service of exploring art as something more than simply a visual medium. This experimentation can be seen in portraits in which realistic draftsmanship and neon colors have a playful back-and-forth, or photographs that present the world from the point of view of someone always in motion. Sound, touch, and motion are all evoked. Landscapes of the Mind collects six of the most innovative landscape artists working today from around the world. Through their eyes, mountains become textures slashes of saturated color, birds become lightning-quick dabs in the sky, and shadowy trees become stand-ins for people. Through oil, acrylic, photography, and spray paint, these artists seek to forge a different kind of map. The natural world and its animal inhabitants have never been portrayed with such empathy and imagination.

Both exhibitions begin December 3, 2016 and run through December 23, 2016 with a joint opening reception on December 8 from 6-8 pm. Entrance is free.

November Exhibitions: Divergent Realities and Illumination: An Exhibition of Fine Art Photography

This November, Agora Gallery will cover remarkable ground within contemporary art through Divergent Realities and Illumination: An Exhibition of Fine Art Photography. The exhibition Divergent Realities is a collection of six artists with uniquely well-defined visual languages. Comprising a detailed watercolor artist, a realist pencil draftsman, a surrealist, a graphic landscape artist, and two abstract painters, the small group is completely different from one another in its concerns and experiments, yet exist in harmony. Illumination features a similarly wide-ranging group of photographers, with abstraction, action, still life, and landscape all included. We see forests, libraries, skyscrapers, lions, and highways. The artists are plainly well-traveled and knowledgeable, and bring their learning to bear on the work. Every photograph on display offers a contemporary view of the world while still referencing the long, socially loaded history of the medium. Both a science and an art form, photography is pushed to its boundaries in Illumination. Together, Agora Gallery’s November exhibitions offer the cutting edge in today’s art.

Both exhibitions open November 8, 2016 and run through November 30, 2016. There will be an opening reception on Thursday, November 10, 2016. Entrance is free.

Wendy Gillespie and Idiosyncratic Expressions

This fall Agora Gallery is pleased to present Solo Exhibition: Wendy Gillespie and group exhibition Idiosyncratic Expressions. Wendy Gillespie paints landscapes that manage to be both highly detailed and impressionistic in their light touch. The works incorporate a mature sense of color and a classical artist’s sensitivity to distance and atmosphere. Gillespie’s versatile skills allow her to depict a wide range of water and land scenes, including tranquil lakes, churning oceans, grassy plains, sun-bathed orchards, and stately mountains. With Gillespie’s finely tuned observational paintings on one hand, the gallery will also feature a group exhibition of exceptional transformative agility in Idiosyncratic Expressions. These cutting-edge interpreters offer surreal visions of people walking up walls, untethered shapes floating through space, and real-world landmarks filtered through bold colors and flattened perspectives. Figures, objects, and terrains are all reimagined. Through painting and sculpture, this group exhibition showcases some of the strongest and most precise artistic visions in the contemporary landscape.

Both exhibitions will open on October 14th, 2016 and run through November 3rd, 2016 with a joint opening reception on Thursday, October 20 from 6-8 PM. Admission is free.

An Autumn of Adventure and Creativity at Agora Gallery – NYC

This September Agora Gallery will present three exhibitions that illustrate art’s ability to tell an ever-expanding range of stories in an almost limitless number of ways. In Interpretive Realms, nature in all its diversity is vividly captured and powerfully transformed through the views of five artists who, though they work in media ranging from photography to traditional Japanese art, all pursue the goal of building a strong personal statement from what they see in the world around them.

Masters of the Imagination presents the work of three women artists from Latin America, each of whom employs a strongly individual take on color, line and texture to provide a surprisingly varied look at a singular artistic heritage. Ardian Tragaj / a solo exhibition puts the challenging vision of the Albanian artist on display, with paintings that combine a lighthearted sense of whimsy with a disturbing undercurrent of darkness and conflict that reflect the political storms which have affected his homeland.

These three exhibits serve to remind us of the many seeming divides that art can bridge—realism vs. abstraction, personal vs. political or dark vs. light. Each of the artists whose work is being shown possesses an ability to harness the energy of those dualities, resulting in works that engage viewers on many levels. Agora Gallery is pleased to be able to present a survey that so successfully demonstrates the continuing emotional and visual power of art.

All three exhibitions will run from September 20, 2016 through October 11, 2016. The opening reception will take place on the evening of September 22nd from 6-8 pm. Entrance is free.
