Bag In Town – Creative Contest

In the perspective of a mutual collaboration to raise new opportunites in the field of fashion design, Néo presents “ Bag in Town”, design competition in collaboration with IED and Eastpak, the authentic urban lifestyle brand.
Creative designers from around the globe are asked to take part in the new design competition Bag in Town – A bag for 24 hours. Held in collaboration with the Istituto Europeo di Design (IED), within the portal creativecontexts.com, this ground-breaking competition explores the relationship between the bag and the urban environment. Encouraging proposals from the worlds of fashion, design and communications, Bag in Town aims to redefine the aesthetic and functional basis underlying bag design, asking one clear and simple question: “What constitutes the perfect bag for 24 hours?”
EASTPAK has always had an eye for the creative and unconventional. Which is why the brand is teaming up with IED – the international network for advanced training in design, fashion, visual communication and management – to give young minds the chance to express their creativity and explore new avenues for engaging their environment.

The Bag in Town design competition is open to anyone over the age of 18. Interested participants are invited to visit the dedicated website www.bagintown.net. Design proposals are accepted by the portal up until July 1st, 2012. The six best projects will be selected on the basis of style and innovative point of view – three by a specialized jury and three by the wider public.
The prizes? The six selected designers will be treated to a once-in-a-lifetime experience at the IED Creative Factory in Milan. Over six intensive days, the finalists will receive expert guidance from EASTPAK product and marketing managers and IED design management specialists with the goal of manufacturing a prototype of each design and transforming their respective projects into reality. These prototypes will then be published on the Bag in Town website and once again subjected to public scrutiny. The design earning the most votes will be awarded a cash prize of €5000 and the opportunity to see the winning creation on the market in 2013, as part of the new EASTPAK collection.

About Snow White and the Huntsman
In Snow White and the Huntsman, a breathtaking new vision of the legendary tale begins.

Kristen Stewart (the Twilight saga, On the Road) plays the only person in the land fairer than the evil Queen Ravenna (Oscar® winner Charlize Theron of Prometheus, Hancock) who is out to destroy her. But what the wicked ruler never imagined was that the young woman who has escaped her clutches and now threatens her reign has been training in the art of war with a Huntsman named Eric (Chris Hemsworth of Thor, The Avengers) who was dispatched to capture her.

Sam Claflin (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) accompanies the film’s cast of international superstars as William, the young duke long enchanted by Snow White’s defiance and innate purity. He is joined in this quest by dwarves accompanying Snow White and the Huntsman on their fantastical journey.

The epic action-adventure is brought to the screen by Joe Roth, the billion-dollar blockbuster producer of Alice in Wonderland, producer Sam Mercer (The Sixth Sense) and, in his feature-film debut, acclaimed commercial director and state-of-the-art visualist Rupert Sanders. www.snowwhiteandthehuntsman.com

Artists: Apply for a Spot in the 2012 Governors Island Art Fair

4heads summons independent artists working anywhere in any discipline to apply for the 2012 Governors Island Art Fair.  Every year, more than 100 artists of exceptional talent and vision are chosen to show their art in this annual exhibition, activating the landmark architecture of New York’s Governors Island—a site that welcomed 448,000 visitors last summer.

The Governors Island Art Fair provides a world-class venue to great artists—unknown and well-known—at a low cost.  Founded by 4heads, a group of working artists based in New York City, this event champions a new model for art fairs by putting the artists and the visitors first.

Basing their decisions solely on the merit of the art itself, the 4heads judging panel selects over 100 artists to participate. Each artist gets a room in one of Governors Island’s historic structures to transform into an exhibit of their own design. Thousands of visitors (art world professionals and regular folk alike) flock to this island oasis across the New York Harbor to witness the results each year.

The exhibition space is free. Admission to the fair is free. Even the ferry ride to the island is free. And that frees up artists to present their work their way in a unique venue framed by the architecture of New York City’s Governors Island.

Deadline for Submission June 24, 2012

Fair Dates:  Every Saturday and Sunday in September 2012

Application:  Online submission form at www.4heads.org

Pennsylvania Guild at Rittenhouse Square

At long last, fine craft is coming to the tree-lined boulevards of Rittenhouse Square.

Through a partnership with the Friends of Rittenhouse Square and in conjunction with the Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen will bring its signature premier Fine Craft Fair, featuring 140 of its very finest craft artists, to downtown Philadelphia on May 11, 12 & 13, 2012. This is believed to be the first professional fine craft fair at the Square.

Founded in 1944 at the recommendation of Eleanor Roosevelt, the Pennsylvania Guild is one of the nation’s largest and most recognized craft guilds, specializing in the advocacy and support of more than 1,400 members whose handwork is known for its unparalleled skill and artistry.  Fine craft is often defined as the hand and mind transformation of raw materials into inspired works of art. The finished products may be either traditional or contemporary in style and design.

Paula Brown-Steedly

“Our craftsmen and women pair the aesthetics of fine art with the technical precision of craftsmanship.” says Executive Director Sherrie Boyer. “This balance creates work that is visually unique yet often fully functional. Imagine a bowl or chair. Our artisans elevate these everyday objects into works of art with style and design so that using them daily is both delightful and practical.”

The Guild’s Fine Craft Fair is the fine craft equivalent of the much-loved Rittenhouse Square Fine Art Show (held bi-annually at the same site). Both shows feature exclusively artisans who are the makers of the original work shown in each booth. Both events “circle” the square with canopies and both are part of a larger urban setting with cafes, and local eateries.

In recognition of each other’s specialties, the Fine Craft Fair will focus on hand-crafted jewelry, contemporary furniture, functional and decorative pottery, designer clothing, fine porcelain, and other interpretive works including blown glass, limited edition photography and sculpture. The Fine Art Show will continue its long tradition of exceptional two-dimensional fine art such as paintings, watercolors, oils, graphite and pastels.

The Pennsylvania Guild is known for its premier events; the Guild’s largest is in Wilmington at Chase Center on the Riverfront (early August) and in Lancaster at downtown’s new Convention Center (mid-November). Both of these shows feature 140 to 200 artisans.

Fair hours are 11 am to 7 pm Friday & Saturday, and 11 am to 5 pm Sunday. Admission is free. Street and garage parking is plentiful.

For more information, go to pacrafts.org/may.  Call (717) 431-8706 or e-mail handmade@pacrafts.org with any questions.
